Positioning Ontario as a Leader in Building the Cars of the Future

Major investments secure automotive manufacturing futures for Windsor and Brampton

Ontario is moving closer to becoming a North American leader in developing and building the car of the future by securing a $3.6 billion investment from Stellantis to modernize and retool its Windsor and Brampton Assembly Plants and build two new research and development centres focusing on electric vehicles and battery technology.

These investments will accelerate the creation of one of the most vertically integrated electric vehicle supply chains in North America.

“Today is yet another example that our plan to build Ontario is delivering huge wins for workers and communities all over this province,” said Doug Ford, MPP for Etobicoke North and Premier of Ontario. “Ontario has everything it needs to be North America’s auto manufacturing powerhouse once again. Where other governments stood by and watched jobs flee this province, we are getting it done and ensuring that cars of the future are made in Ontario by Ontario workers.”

Stellantis is emerging as a trailblazer in creating an integrated supply chain and EV ecosystem in Ontario. Provincial funding of up to $513 million will position Ontario as a North American hub for Stellantis, from planning to production. The funding includes:

  • $287 million in provincial grants to build a new, flexible multi-energy vehicle assembly line at the Windsor Assembly Plant to build plug-in, hybrid and battery-electric vehicles.
  • $132 million in provincial grants to modernize the Brampton Assembly Plant with a new, flexible, multi-energy vehicle assembly line that will diversify production capacity by building gasoline, hybrid and battery-electric vehicles under one roof.
  • $94 million to modernize the Windsor Automotive Research and Development Centre through:
    • A new Electric Vehicle Centre of Competency to serve Stellantis’ global needs for technology, process and product development for electrified and electric vehicles;
    • And a cutting-edge Battery Pack Testing Centre of Competency that will serve as the North American testing ground for the battery packs that will be used in the company’s vehicles.

The Ontario PCs have set a course to transform our auto sector by strengthening Ontario’s innovation capacity, enhancing our already robust parts supply chain, and leveraging our skilled workforce in communities with deep roots in manufacturing, like Windsor and Brampton.

Over the past 18 months, the automotive sector in Ontario has seen almost $14 billion in investments for new vehicle production mandates and battery manufacturing. This includes over $5 billion transformative hybrid and electric vehicle production at Ontario assembly plants.

Doug Ford and the Ontario PCs will get it done in Kanata—Carleton and Scarborough—Guildwood

The Ontario PCs are proud to have two local champions as candidates for the by-elections announced today in Kanata—Carleton and Scarborough—Guildwood. “As our province continues to grow, it’s never been more important to build Ontario,” said Doug Ford, leader of the Ontario PC Party. “The choice in these by-elections is clear. Sean Webster and Gary Crawford […]
